LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

I volunteer at Holton Lee (Just off the Bakers Arms roundabout) and am trying to set up an area at Holton Lee where various outdoor ball games can be played.

The games will be Petanque/Boules/Boccia and any other ball games that can use the same outside court.

Is there anyone who is interested in helping out with rules of the games ie What size courts would be needed, could we make 1 court for all to play on or is that not a practical idea? Also I am interested in Funding for this to happen?

The court will be for everyone's use, not just disabled. This is very early days, but if we can accommodate various sports then all the better. There is no timetable set at the moment, it is a case of do this once and do it properly.

Holton Lee is also exploring a orienteering course for next year, so this would add to the opportunities available.

Any players, clubs or teams that play these games or any others that are suitable, please contact me

It wss not until I was invited to the 50th aniversery of the opening of Henry Harbin that I was told by Mr Collins of form 2B that only teacher allowed to use the
cane was Charlie Piece of 3A on the instruction of Gunner Smith, the cane never used. When I was there, it may have been but in only in exceptional circonstances. It was not used when I was there, enlike Oakdale where it was used daily particularly by Miss Cox may she rot in hell.
I do not like to have the fine teachers maligned when they are nearly all dead and not able to defend themselves

My father used to take me to the Shipwright's arms when I was a boy. I would sit outside with half a shandy and a bag of crisps.

I can remember the live music and the place being full of customers.

I believe it became unsafe, foundation-wise, so it had to be pulled down.

Can't find any pictures of it, though.

Kind men can still cane, of course.

Because you 'never knew' that the cane was ever used doesn't mean to say it wasn't.

Being a prefect at the time doesn't mean you would know whether a student was talking rubbish or not.

I used to go to the Shipwrights Arms inn when I was seventeen in 1969. It was a great pub drew a great crowd and used to have some wonderful bands and solo singers on too. I was really upset when I heard that they were going to pull it down even though the reason they gave for having to do so sort of made sense. Do you know where I can get some old photos of the place as I would really love to have some. Had some great times there and made some great memories and great relationships.
