On Sunday 27^th May, the annual fund raising concert for the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s Benevolent Fund will take place at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts, starting at 3.00pm.

Gifted Young Conductor in Association Rui Pinheiro will direct an outstanding programme, including Dvořák’s exuberant Carnival Overture and Grieg’s wonderfully melodic Piano Concerto played by the Swedish-born pianist Peter Jablonski. Saint-Saëns’ dazzling Organ Symphony with its brilliant orchestration and sonorous splendour brings the afternoon to a rousing conclusion.

Organiser, violinist Janice Thorgilson, is particularly delighted that this year’s concert features the internationally acclaimed Jablonski. She said; “Peter is an inspirational artist with an extraordinary energy and musical insight. This promises to be an electrifying performance of a much-loved concerto.”

Every year the Benevolent Fund responds to requests for financial support from musicians affected by illness or injury, enabling a quicker return to work than might otherwise have been the case. Established by BSO chief executive, the late Ken Matchett, in 1958, the Fund is financed primarily by the annual concert where every performer donates their services, a tradition which has continued uninterrupted for more than half a century. Members of the orchestra, past and present, are grateful to all the guest artists, including every principal conductor from Rufolf Schwarz to Marin Alsop, who have generously participated over the years.

For this year’s spring show, Bournemouth Gilbert & Sullivan Society is presenting Ballads,Songs and Snatches, a specially written piece using music from eight of the much-loved operettas.

The Society welcomes a new director for the show, Trevor Smith, who also conceived the libretto for Ballads,Songs and Snatches. He is a home-grown talent, having been a member of the Society for many years. He first appeared on stage at the age of eight, and developed his interest in directing by being assistant to professional directors of the Society’s productions. Now he is flying solo for the first time. Trevor, who works as an administrator at Bournemouth University, says, ‘Even when I was appearing in a show, I found myself interested in how it all came together, and the Society sent me on a very useful directing course. I love to see people enjoying themselves, and to help actors bring out the most of what they can do. Directing gives me a natural high.’

Ballads, Songs and Snatches is at the Tivoli Theatre, Wimborne (01202 885566), on Friday 20thApril, at the Regent Centre, Christchurch (01202 499199), on Friday 27th April,and at the Barrington Theatre, Ferndown (01202 894858) on Friday 4th May, allat 7.30 pm.
