The BSO is to perform Verdi’s Requiem in aid of its Benevolent Fund at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts, on Sunday 22nd May starting at 7.00pm.

Associate Guest Conductor David Hill unites an outstanding quartet of soloists with the full forces of orchestra and the BS Chorus, in its centenary year. Ailish Tynan, the sparkling Irish soprano and Paul Charles Clarke, the internationally acclaimed tenor, will both perform.

The iconic choral work was written in memory of the Italian writer Allesandro Manzoni. This event marks the anniversary of its first performance, conducted by Verdi, in the church of San Marco, Milan in 1874.

Janice Thorgilson, violinist and organiser of the popular annual fundraiser said: “David Hill is widely recognized as one of the leading choral directors in the UK. Under his expert direction one can be assured of a perfectly balanced, meticulous performance.”

Every year the Benevolent Fund responds to requests for financial support from musicians affected by illness or injury, enabling a quicker return to work than might otherwise have been the case. Established by BSO chief executive, the late Ken Matchett, in 1958, the Fund is financed primarily by the annual concert where every performer donates their services, a tradition which has continued uninterrupted for more than half a century. Members of the orchestra, past and present, are grateful to all the guest artists, including every principal conductor from Rufolf Schwarz to Marin Alsop, who have generously participated over the years.
