Funding for Poole’s Twin Sails Bridge project is awaiting final ministerial approval.
Borough of Poole is expectantly awaiting final approval from the Department for Transport (DfT) for a £14.1 million grant to help fund the construction of the town’s much needed second harbour crossing. The council has provided the DfT with all the required information and Government approval of funding is the final hurdle before the development of the Twin Sails Bridge project can begin.
Jim Bright, Strategic Director, Borough of Poole, said: "We are in regular touch with the Government and they are aware of the importance of the scheme to Poole. We are pleased that the scheme has successfully progressed through a number of Government stages. We hope the Government will advise us of its decision in the next couple of weeks but they are unable to give us a definite date."
Councillor Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Local Economy, Borough of Poole, said: "Changes in the process have resulted in some delays and this is frustrating as we are keen to press on with the contract. We expect a positive outcome and are thankful for the support that we have received from our regional partners and especially the Regional Development Agency."
The £37 million Twin Sails Bridge project provides critical infrastructure for one of the largest regeneration areas in the South West. More than 40 per cent of Poole’s homes over the next 20 years will be delivered in this central area and more than 5,000 jobs could be created.
The South West Regional Development Agency has also identified the Twin Sails Bridge project as a priority scheme and has agreed a £9.96 million investment in this project.
