Rossmore Bus Story - The Early Years

This is from the country bus website and where the creator, Peter Roberts has kindly allowed me to turn some of the interesting content on the Rossmore Bus Service into an audio video slideshow.

I can remember many trips on this bus service during the 1960s and 1970s when visiting my aunt (Nan Dyer of Rossmore Road) and uncle (Cec Dyer). My sister and I would take the Hants & Dorset bus from Alderney West up to Rossmore Road and, later that day, take the Rossmore bus to Parkstone and back.

The bus was always crowded but, they ran every 15 minutes or so, so it didn't matter if you 'missed' one, there was always another very soon. Hopefully, I will add more to the story soon as I take a look at the more recent Rossmore Bus Service.

Rossmore Bus Story - The Later Years

Rossmore Bus Company was a very popular subject judging by the feedback to the last slideshow video. Thank you for all the Likes and Shares 😊

This post is another article from countrybus.com that takes the story through the later years up to 2013.

Thank you to Peter Roberts, the article creator, for giving me permission to feature his work.

My sister and I didn't use the service very much after 1979 but still enjoyed the occasional trip to and from Parkstone, even though we'd moved away from the Rossmore area. I can remember the rides being smoother on Cosy Coaches 😊

With the Rossmore route now being operated by Cosy Coaches, 1975 finds UFX520L - one of the two government grant assisted 53-seater Bedfords working the service (the other was UFX521L) - about to start the ascent of Monkeys Hump away from Heavenly Bottom. The permanently fixed rooftop destination display faithfully depicts the name of both these localities. The three regular drivers covering the two buses in service at this time on a three shift pattern were Robby Martin, Dave Shear and Reg Davis. School journeys were operated by double deckers CHD606 (hailing from Essex) and KEL122 (ex Bournemouth Corporation).

Thank you for your feedback.

Poole's Crossings From Quay to Quay

Here's a quick history of the crossing between Poole and Hamworthy.

I have lived in Poole all my life and can remember being fascinated with its workings as a young boy while waiting for it to go up and back down.

My mother used to explain that there were bridges even before the one I waited for.

They can be seen here.

Old Poole Advertisements (can you remember any of them?)

Looking through this selection of advertising from the businesses that existed in what we now call 'Old Poole', I had to smile at the styles they used. Clearly they didn't know what worked in advertising and what didn't but they just said nice things.

The telephone numbers are so short, too. Just three digits in some of them. I bet they couldn't imagine that, one day, we'd be using eleven digits 😊

Old Poole High Street

I sometimes wish I could transport back in time to Old Poole … just a few minutes at a time to see what it was really like.

Imagine being able to take photos and bring them back to 2024 😊

Although, back in the days mentioned here, disease was rife and, apparently, the recommendations on cleaning up the town weren't fully taken on board as the authorities believed Poole wasn't affected that much.

Anyway, this collection is from Jenny Oliver's book about Poole High Street.

Hants & Dorset Motor Services

The first part of this short video features Hants & Dorset buses. I can't work out the date but must be around 70s to very early 80s, perhaps.

The second part features the yellow trolley buses. I'd forgotten about the turntable that they used to turn the buses around and then having to connect them to the powerline again. What a unique idea.

West Moors Railway

I must confess to knowing very little about a railway line and station that were based in West Moors. I have, however, come across some history along with a few wonderful documentation.

Round Island, Poole Harbour

I'm not sure when Sally-ann Fowler left our shores for Australia but, at one time, Sally seemed to live on Round Island in Poole, Dorset.

Little is known about this private island but Sally-ann (or her father, Leo Fowler, by all accounts) took some wonderful footage I did attempt to contact Sally-ann but to no avail. However, as her film was discovered online, I thought she wouldn't mind me borrowing it for a while so others can see what life was like back in Poole, though the year it was taken is unclear … 1960s perhaps? Maybe you know so, please let me know and I'll pass it on.

UPDATE: Dad bought this Island when I was about 5 years old in about 1958 he sold it when I was about 14( wish he never had sold it) during in that time he rebuild all the cottages and the cedar studio built a new boat house and strong wie jetty. we had lovely summer holidays and also as my father was an engineer in Birmingham having a factory called Lemark he liked to make sure we spent our holidays away from Sutton Coldfield Warwickshire. Now as I live in Australia dearly wish to go down memory lane!

There is some amazing rare footage of the island, an island that most of us have never actually set foot on but could always view from a distance.

Sally Says: "When I was just a litte girl My father Leo Fowler loved to take home movies of our life 1960's Pop's Movies - Round Island, Poole Harbour"

Note that the technology in those days wasn't what it is today so the quality is poor throughout. However, unusually for those times, this was filmed in colour. I've also changed the soundtrack to 'Royalty Free' as the background tune that was added originally was copyrighted which FB kindly pointed out to me 🙂 Enjoy this rare insight into Round Island, Poole.

NOTE: (from Sally-ann's family): "Sally-ann left us 3rd April (I'm guessing 2012 or 13 Ed.) here in Western Australia. She was loved very dearly by all who knew her." Thank you for the memories, Sally-ann 😊
