New Local Plan Set to Shape the Future of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole

New Local Plan Set to Shape the Future of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole

A new chapter in the future development of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole has begun, with BCP Council officially launching work on a brand-new Local Plan that will guide how the area grows and changes over the next 15 years.

Covering the period from 2028 to 2044, the plan will set out where new homes should be built, how jobs and businesses can be supported, and what improvements are needed to transport, schools, healthcare, green spaces and other community facilities.

The Local Plan will play a key role in determining how the region responds to population growth while balancing the needs of residents, businesses and the environment.

Among the priorities already identified by the council are:

  • Regenerating town centres and high streets

  • Supporting economic growth and employment opportunities

  • Protecting important natural habitats and green spaces

  • Improving transport connections

  • Ensuring infrastructure keeps pace with new development

  • Planning for future community facilities and services

Residents Will Have Their Say

Local people will have the opportunity to influence the plan through a series of public consultations expected to begin later this year.

These consultations will allow residents, businesses, community groups and stakeholders to share their views on what they believe the future priorities for the area should be.

Given the significance of the plan, participation is likely to be crucial in shaping decisions that could affect local communities for decades to come.

A Challenging Timetable

The new Local Plan is being prepared under recently introduced national planning rules, which require councils to complete the process within 30 months.

While that may sound achievable, there is an interesting challenge ahead. The plan itself is intended to cover a period beginning in 2028, meaning much of the work will need to be completed in a relatively short timeframe if the plan is to be in place when intended.

Lessons from Previous Plans

For many local residents, the announcement may also prompt memories of previous planning ambitions.

In Poole, the 2018 Town Centre Masterplan outlined major regeneration proposals, including improvements around the bus station, redevelopment of the former NatWest buildings opposite, and plans for the old Power Station site near the Twin Sails Bridge.

Eight years later, much of that vision remains unrealised, leaving some residents understandably cautious about new long-term planning promises.

That said, every new plan presents a fresh opportunity. If delivered effectively, the new Local Plan could help shape thriving town centres, better infrastructure and stronger communities across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole for years to come.

We'll continue to follow developments closely and will share details as soon as public consultation dates and opportunities to participate are announced.
