Poole-based founder launches an activity directory to help families, residents, and visitors discover things to do across Dorset
There's a moment most of us know well. It's Friday afternoon, the weekend is stretching out ahead of you, and you're desperately trying to figure out what to actually do with it. You've got seventeen tabs open. One for paddleboarding, one for some kind of forest experience you half-remember seeing on Instagram, a couple of activity centres you're not sure are even still running. Half an hour later, you've closed the lot and settled for the park. Again.
Dorset is one of the most activity-rich counties in the UK, yet research suggests most residents and visitors only ever discover around 10% of what's actually on their doorstep [source]. The kayaking sessions, the bushcraft days, the hidden wild swimming spots. They exist, they're brilliant, and there's a whole lot more of them than most people realise. Call it the Dorset Discovery Gap, and it's exactly what UK Activity Breaks was built to close.
Helena Prager, a Poole local and mum, found herself in that exact loop one too many times. She knew the experiences were out there, but finding them, comparing them and actually booking something felt like a part-time job. So she built the thing she kept wishing existed.
UK Activity Breaks is an online directory bringing together hundreds of activities, experiences and breaks across the UK, with a particular focus on growing the Dorset listings. Whether you're after something to do with the kids on a drizzly Saturday, a date night that's a bit more interesting than dinner, a hen do with an edge, or a solo micro-adventure to reset your head, the directory pulls it all into one place. Think kayaking, axe throwing, woodland retreats, outdoor waterparks, indoor climbing, wild swimming spots and a whole lot in between.
Helena grew up around Dorset's activity scene. She's a member at a local watersports centre, so she's seen firsthand how brilliant these small operators are and how hard it can be for them to get in front of the right people. A lot of Dorset's best experiences sit just off the main search results. The businesses running them are passionate and professional, but they don't always have the time or budget to compete online with the big national platforms.
"I knew the experiences were out there, but finding them, comparing them, and actually booking felt like a part-time job," says Helena Prager, Founder of UK Activity Breaks. "I built the platform I kept wishing existed: one place where you can find a date night, a kids' drizzly Saturday plan, or a solo micro-adventure without having seventeen browser tabs open."
That's the gap UK Activity Breaks is trying to close. Providers can list their activities on the directory, giving them a targeted, affordable route to visibility with people who are already looking for exactly what they offer. It's been welcomed warmly by local businesses who've been eager to get involved from the start.
For residents and visitors, the real joy of the platform is discovering things you didn't know existed near you. That paddleboarding session fifteen minutes from your front door. The escape room your teenagers will actually enjoy. The bushcraft day that's been running in a Dorset woodland for years but never shows up when you Google it. Helena says she built it to help people get out and do more, particularly families who want to make the most of where they live without spending hours working out how.
New listings are added regularly, and local activity providers can submit their experiences to be featured and reach an engaged, ready-to-book audience.
If you're overdue a proper adventure or just looking for something good to do this weekend, it's worth a look. Head to ukactivitybreaks.co.uk and see what's been hiding on your doorstep.
