Poole Quay Hotel closed abruptly due to unforeseen circumstances.
Speculation about its closure had been ongoing for months.
Planning approval for a new hotel, flats, and shops was granted last summer.
The hotel boasted 70 sea-view bedrooms, two meeting rooms, a restaurant, and a bar.
Developers and the council had been in discussions for five years regarding plans to demolish and replace the hotel.
Approval was granted in August for five buildings, including a 146-bedroom hotel, 179 residential flats, and two shops.
The residential units will include 65 one-bed, 104 two-bed, and ten three-bed units but won't have dedicated parking.
Andi Kercini from MHA described the new proposals as "first-class facilities for Poole".
The site was previously occupied by the East Quay Gasworks and later the Thistle Hotel.
Previous proposals for the site were rejected by BCP Council's planning committee in 2021.
