September in Upton & Lytchett Minster: Highlights from The Clarion
As the seasons shift from summer warmth to autumn’s mellow tones, this month’s Clarion is brimming with stories that celebrate community, history, and local life here in Lytchett Minster and Upton.
🌟 Celebrating Our Young Stars
The Mayor’s Award for Excellence went to four outstanding pupils across our local schools, recognising their positive contributions to school life. Their achievements are a reminder of the inspiring young people growing up in our town.
📚 Schools & Education
Lytchett Minster’s headmaster shares thought-provoking reflections on whether the long six-week summer holiday still serves children well, especially in today’s changing climate and educational landscape.
🔥 Guides Back to Basics
The 1st Upton Guides enjoyed a muddy but memorable “back to basics” camp — from tie-dye t-shirts to cooking on open fires, with a dash of unexpected fish and chips thanks to the British weather!
🔔 Widening Horizons
Local bell ringers travelled to Kingston upon Thames to mark the anniversary of King Athelstan’s coronation, connecting Dorset traditions with over a thousand years of English history.
🏡 Community Updates
From Upton Library’s clubs and craft mornings, to the LUBCA’s ongoing improvements at the Community Centre, there’s plenty happening for residents of all ages. The Allotment Association also reports a bumper year, proving the rewards of growing (and weeding!) close to home.
🌸 Events & Celebrations
The Horticultural and Craft Show was a colourful triumph, brimming with local produce, floral displays, and community spirit. Meanwhile, the Scarecrow Competition brought Disney magic to our streets, with creative entries delighting passers-by.
🎖️ Remembering & Reflecting
We marked VJ Day with a poignant service and afternoon tea, while preparations are already underway for this year’s Poppy Appeal — which raised over £17,000 locally in 2024.
📖 Special Features
This month also includes a nostalgic look back at when TV favourite Worzel Gummidge visited Poole Market in the early 1980s, delighting children and even arriving by Model T Ford with a real elephant in tow!
🍂 Faith & Harvest
As harvest festival approaches, local churches reflect on generosity, gratitude, and the importance of supporting our food banks during challenging times.
And, of course, the magazine is packed with local notices, clubs, small ads, and ways to get involved — from U3A groups and flower clubs, to volunteering with The Clarion itself.
